The first generation Toyota Yaris in Canada (aka Toyota Echo) was available with a 1.3L engine and 86HP, built on an FF-platform with front wheel drive and a uniquely designed center mounted dashboard. Which incorporated the speedometer and other standard digital instruments in the center of the dashboard facing the pilot. This unique style made it very popular as a small compact, inexpensive car and more fuel efficient than any other vehicle available in Canada at the time. In Europe it was also available with a 1.4L turbo diesel engine, while in Australia there was a limited edition with a VVT-i 1.5L turbo charged engine with 150HP.
